ICU baby understands that each family has different financial circumstances. Our team of in-hospital volunteers witness firsthand the additional financial strain that having a baby in the NICU places on a family. When the hospital identifies a family who would be able to spend more time with their baby if it were not for financial hardships, ICU baby evaluates the qualifying family’s needs through an application and interview process. Each application is reviewed by a committee and, if requirements are met, ICU baby provides a bus pass, gas card, parking voucher or private transportation to supplement transportation costs. Each family is required to reapply on a monthly basis and renewal of the transportation benefit is given if parents regularly visit and engage in the care of their baby.
ICU baby’s Family Transportation Assistance Program program is currently offered to economically disadvantaged families with a baby in the NICU of Holtz Children’s Hospital at UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. ICU baby is in discussions with Baptist Health System’s South Miami Hospital about unveiling a similar program for NICU families there.
