Get Involved with ICU baby

ICU baby partners with the Volunteer Services Departments of Holtz Children’s Hospital and South Miami Hospital to execute ICU baby’s in-hospital volunteer programs.

Volunteer with ICU baby

Become an ICU baby Volunteer. We would love for you to get involved in a way that is meaningful and enjoyable for you. Whether you would like to help plan a fundraiser, prepare NICU Packs, or serve dinner to NICU families, we welcome all volunteers and look forward to your involvement.

Please review the In-Hospital Volunteer Opportunities below to consider what best suits you.

In-Hospital Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers must have special clearance to enter the NICU. Training and screenings conducted by South Miami Hospital and Holtz Children’s Hospital are required to become an In-Hospital ICU baby volunteer. In order to participate, volunteers must:

  • Be 21 or older,
  • Be able to make an annual commitment of volunteer hours, and
  • Get an annual flu shot.

ICU DELIVERING NICU PACKS (Screenings Required)

ICU baby invites individual’s with NICU experience of their own to enter the NICU to deliver its signature NICU Packs and provide parent-to-parent support to NICU families at their baby’s bedside. The ‘Packs’ are presented weekly to all families with babies whose expected NICU stay is three weeks or more at South Miami Hospital or Holtz Children’s Hospital. During the visit, volunteers review the contents of the bag with the families and answer any of the families questions, serving as a critical resource for them.

Delivering ICU baby’s ‘Packs’ allow volunteers to present NICU families with a gift from the community and to offer bedside support during a very challenging time. During the NICU visit, volunteers will also deliver snacks to all parents who are spending time with their babies in the Unit.

NICU experience is required for this program - whether you have had a NICU baby, been a NICU baby yourself or previously worked in a NICU.

SUPPER OF SUPPORT (Screenings Required)

ICU baby hosts monthly dinners for all families with a baby in the NICU at South Miami Hospital and Holtz Children’s Hospital. The supper is served by volunteers in a conference room in the hospital so that families can briefly leave their baby’s side for a warm meal. The Supper organically turns in to an informal support group as families have the opportunity to speak with other NICU families who are going through a NICU journey of their own.

NICU experience is encouraged, but not required, to become a volunteer for this program - whether you have had a NICU baby, been a NICU baby yourself, or previously worked in a NICU. Volunteers must also be available once a month on Wednesday evenings.

ICU READING TO A NICU BABY (Screenings Required)

ICU baby is kicking off a new program in May at Holtz Children’s Hospital. Volunteers will read to babies in the NICU. Many parents work or live far from the hospital and are unable to visit their baby often. This volunteer opportunity will be a rewarding way to contribute to the wellbeing of NICU babies as volunteers will provide the babies with the comfort of a presence and hearing a soothing voice in their parents' absence. Reseach has also shown that reading to a baby at this early stage benefits language and brain development.

Volunteers must be available on Wednesdays from 11am-1pm.

PACK-A-NICU PACK (Suitable for up to 20 Volunteers)

ICU baby presents its signature NICU Packs to all families whose baby has an expected stay in the NICU of 3 weeks or more at South Miami Hospital or Holtz Children’s Hospital. This ‘Pack’ is a tote bag that contains essential items that help the family care for their baby while admitted.

The ‘Pack-a-Pack’ Project is an opportunity for individuals from the community to prepare NICU Packs by gift wrapping and putting the items into the bag. Each ‘packer’ is asked to write a personal note of encouragement to the family of the NICU baby and it is attached to the outside of the NICU Pack.

The goal of each ‘Pack-a-Pack’ event is to prepare 50 bags. ICU baby provides all of the materials necessary. This is a great on-site activity as ICU baby can travel to your location and guide this event.

SUPPER OF SUPPORT (Sponsorship Opportunity)

ICU baby hosts monthly dinners for all families with a baby in the NICU at South Miami Hospital or Holtz Children’s Hospital. These dinners are sponsored by local families, companies and restaurants. The meal is served in a conference room in the hospital so that families can briefly leave their baby’s side for a warm meal. Host a Fundraiser to Benefit ICU baby

An event hosted by a member of the community gives ICU baby a chance to meet others who are interested in supporting a baby in the NICU and their family. Hosting a fundraising event is an opportunity to raise money for ICU baby’s ongoing projects while creating awareness about ICU baby and the support offered to families of a baby in the NICU.

ICU baby looks forward to hearing your fundraiser ideas and putting them into the works! If you would like to host an ICU baby fundraiser, please CONTACT US.

ICU HOSTING A PRIVATE DINNER OR COCKTAIL PARTY

ICU baby would like to continue to raise awareness about the programs provided to NICU families and expand its network of generous supporters. ICU baby is a grassroots, non-profit organization that is only able to carry out its projects because of donations by members of the community and corporate sponsors.

Volunteers who host a small, private dinner or cocktail party enable us to share our mission and goals with potential supporters in an intimate setting. These dinner or cocktail parties have the opportunity to be “mini fundraisers” for the organization and will help ICU baby continue to serve struggling NICU families in our community.

Note: One hundred percent of donations made to ICU baby directly fund ongoing projects, as all administrative fees are paid privately.
